This is an open market that was started by women who wanted to sell their products directly to visitors. Over the years the market has seen its share of growth as it now opens daily on different locations around Nairobi city. Today we have platforms that seek to work with these craftsmen on a pilot project to identify areas that will enrich the locals and community at large. The government and other Non-governmental organizations are now promoting the “buy Kenya, build Kenya empowerment initiate “The markets spread across the city bring about a vibrant collection of colors that attracts both local and international tourists who are in search of unique handicrafts. Be ready to learn the culture of bargaining as this is an African culture. The markets are one stop shops for curios, paintings, drawings, clothe jewelry, wood carvings and many handmade artifacts made in Kenya by local artisans. This concept was borrowed from the Masai
people. The market moves around the city on different days of the week, so here is what you need to know;
Days of the week
- Tuesday: Kijabe Street opposite Norfolk Hotel
- Wednesday: Capital Center on Mombasa road near the airport
- Thursday: Nakumatt Junction shopping mall on Ngong road
- Friday: Village Market in Gigiri [upper car park]
- Saturday: The high court parking lot in the center
- Sunday: The high court parking lot in the city center
